Sometimes the threads we follow lead us to unexpected places — places where passion, creativity, and community intersect. For Sonia, that journey began as a way to relax and became a calling that now shapes beautiful, handwoven bags.

Born in Venezuela, Sonia once spent her days immersed in campaigns, pitches, and deadlines as a publicist. Life in the fast-paced world of advertising left her searching for a creative outlet — a way to unwind and reconnect with herself. That outlet came in the form of weaving.

“I started weaving just to relax,” Sonia recalls.

When she moved to Colombia, her quiet hobby transformed into something much bigger. She discovered a love for Trapillo — T-shirt yarn made from recycled cotton jersey fabric. It was beautiful, sustainable, and full of potential… but notoriously difficult to work with.

Challenges, Persistence, and Growth

At first, working with Trapillo was no easy task. The thick, recycled cotton yarn was tricky to manipulate, and weaving flawless designs felt almost impossible. But Sonia’s determination carried her through. With patience and persistence, she learned the techniques, practiced every day, and gradually tamed the challenging material.

Now, her hands move confidently over Trapillo, creating unique bags that are as durable as they are beautiful. Every stitch reflects both skill and a journey of perseverance.

Family as Inspiration and a Lifelong Learner

It was Sonia’s children who gave her the courage to take her craft further. Inspired by their encouragement, she began thinking beyond weaving for herself and started selling her creations. What started as a relaxing hobby became a small business full of possibility — a way to support her family while sharing her artistry with the world.

Even after years of practice, Sonia never stops learning. Her commitment to her craft shines in her willingness to grow: she seeks advice from her local artisan community, attends courses offered by various organizations, and constantly experiments with new techniques.

“I always want to improve,” Sonia says. “I want every bag I make to show how much I love what I do.”

Her dedication isn’t just about perfecting technique — it’s about honoring the craft, the materials, and the stories woven into every creation.
